Grant Allen letters and manuscript, 1892-1899.

The collection contains six letters from Allen: to publisher Payn enclosing a "popular scientific" called Big Bills to be published after Pretty Poll; to Dear Sir, 13 Sept. 1892, thanking a fan who likes his serious writing; to Dear Sir, 3 Aug. 1895, agreeing to sign a copy of one of his books; to Fred, 5 Sept. 1895, wishing him success on his lecture tour, and comments on Allen's father's views; to Dear Sir, 18 Nov. 1895, giving permission to publish his portrait; and to Dear Sir, 1 July 1899, regrets he will be unable to lecture at the London Institute because of his health. Also includes a corrected five-page manuscript of his book review of Darwinism, by Alfred Russell Wallace.

Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (Grant Allen), novelist and essayist, was born near Kingston, Ontario, Canada and emigrated to England. Allen loved to travel and his series of guide books gave him monetary support and time to follow his intellectual bent as a freethinker/socialist.
